Violent Soho

Violent Soho

(Ecstatic Peace)

Violent Soho formed in their home country of Australia but have been calling Brooklyn, NY home for the past year. It’s been quite a ride for the Australian quartet who have found themselves repeatedly pinching themselves since their first foray into international waters at the end of 2008. Showcasing in London, New York and Los Angeles, the band was signed off the back of one of their shows by the inimitable Sonic Youth main man, Thurston Moore, to his Ecstatic Peace! Label.

From there it was over to the UK where the band holed up at Rockfield residential studios in Wales recording what was to become their self tilted American debut with producer of their dreams Gil Norton (Pixies / Foo Fighters).  The album was mixed in Los Angeles by Rich Costey (who had last teamed with Norton on the Foo Fighters Grammy Award winning album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace).

Once Violent Soho relocated to Brooklyn the band didn’t have too much time to get used to their apartment (a 4 bedroom affair with 10 residents) before jumping in a van and heading out across America with Built To Spill. That tour ran into dates with the Raveonettes and Black Angles, before Violent Soho joined up with Dinosaur Jr to see out 2009 across the west coast of America.

This year has seen the release of Violent Soho’s album and the success of the first single.  Not only did “Jesus Stole My Girlfriend” get heavy rotation at major radio stations across the US (read Live 105, KNDD and WKQX) but around the same time the band were asked to re-record the lyrics in Simlish for popular computer game Sims 3.

2010 has also seen Soho doing what they do best… touring, touring touring They played a slew of dates at SxSW and then headed out for a month on the road as main support for one of their biggest heroes The Bronx. They managed to fit in festival appearances with Hole, Alice in Chains and Deftones before heading over to the UK in May for The Great Escape festival.
