Meghan Wolf

"Theory of Gravity"

(Sky Council Recordings)

Raised on 20 wooded acres in Western Massachusetts, artist Meghan Wolf often found herself lost to the quiet of the forest and the rhythms of the natural world. “Walking and water bring melodies and words to the surface for me,” she says. “When I was a kid, I would spend hours wandering the woods and making up little pieces of songs.” These days Wolf calls Brooklyn her home, and is equally inspired by the urban sights and soundscapes that surround her: “I find the city and its teeming, crashing life fascinating. And when I pass by a crumbling brownstone or a converted warehouse, I can’t help imagining the lives going on inside.”

On her first album, Theory of Gravity, Wolf debuts a musical presence that is both down-to-earth and cosmopolitan – blending organic rhythms and soulful lyrics with modern beats and an urban vibe. Her penetrating vocals and impassioned performance recall virtuosos Joan Baez and PJ Harvey, with contemporary undercurrents of Radiohead and Morcheeba.

Wolf’s flair for performance is underlined by the fact that she has already built a successful career as an actor, with guest-starring appearances on TV series including Law and Order, The Education of Max Bickford, Hack, Guiding Light, and All My Children; roles in films such as the forthcoming Untitled Nancy Meyers Project (with Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin); and numerous commercial credits (including national spots for AT&T, Sony, and Campbell’s Soup).

Wolf, who considers songwriting her first love, returned to her musical roots while earning an MFA in performance in Seattle, and began playing solo acoustic shows in small venues. On her return to New York, she played and recorded with such locals as T.H. White, Infinity Plus One, SuperChix, and the punk rock band New York No Stars, which she fronted for 5 years as lead singer and lyricist. She has continued collaborating with musician and producer T.H. White, who encouraged her to conceive and develop a solo album.

Since signing with Sky Council Recordings in 2008, Wolf has been performing in east coast venues and building a major buzz towards the debut of Theory of Gravity, which hits stores in September of 2009. Following the release, Wolf looks forward to heading out on the road and launching a full-blown tour for the album.
